Project overview
The founder of Bombay Lab envisioned a fragrance collection inspired by iconic tourist destinations and cultural experiences across India. Rather than conventional perfumery, the brief was to capture the essence, emotions and atmosphere of specific Indian locations in wearable form.
The founder worked with a perfumer who personally visited each destination, experienced the surroundings and documented olfactory notes on site. Bombay Lab then partnered with Fragrance & Fashion to translate those creative briefs into commercially viable, IFRA-compliant fragrances.
The challenge
- Converting sensory experiences from real-world locations into wearable fragrances
- Maintaining authenticity while ensuring commercial appeal
- Developing six distinct fragrances with individual identities
- Meeting stringent requirements for clean, IFRA-compliant formulations
- Achieving consensus among multiple stakeholders during evaluation
Our approach
Phase 1 — Understanding the vision
The founder shared detailed fragrance briefs and the notes collected during destination visits. Each fragrance represented a different Indian experience, requiring careful interpretation. Our team analysed the perfumer's notes, target consumer expectations, performance requirements and regulatory standards before any bench work began.
Phase 2 — Fragrance development
Our perfumers built multiple trials for each concept. The Ganga-river-inspired fragrance, for instance, required extensive experimentation — four distinct versions before the founder's vision was matched. Across all six concepts, numerous modifications and refinements were carried out.
Key deliverables
- 6 customised fragrance developments
- Multiple trial batches per concept
- 4–6 versions per fragrance variant
- IFRA-conformant formulations
- Clean fragrance profiles with strong market appeal
Initial development was completed within 15 days and samples were submitted for evaluation.
Phase 3 — Evaluation and refinement
Bombay Lab assembled a panel of approximately 25 team members to evaluate the fragrances. Feedback covered fragrance authenticity, scent cleanliness, wearability, performance and overall appeal. Based on the panel's response we ran further modifications and resubmitted revised samples. Multiple rounds of testing, refinement and approvals played out over 45–60 days.
Final approval
Through continuous collaboration and extensive sampling, all six fragrances were approved. The final collection delivered:
- Clean fragrance profiles
- Consistent performance
- IFRA compliance
- Alignment with the original destination-inspired concept
Packaging consultation
The founder wanted premium packaging that reflected the collection's uniqueness. We recommended multiple packaging vendors, presented bottle and cap options, shared samples for evaluation and assisted in final vendor selection. The final bottle-cap combination was confirmed after several rounds of review.
Production and delivery
Following approval of both fragrance and packaging components, the purchase order was placed, production planning began, quality checks were carried out across batches and packaging components were coordinated with the selected vendors. Finished products were manufactured and delivered within the committed timeline.
Results
- Six destination-inspired fragrances successfully developed
- Multiple fragrance trials and refinements delivered
