At Fragrance & Fashion, custom fragrance composition is performed by our in-house perfumers at our Moriya, Ahmedabad facility. We develop bespoke accords for private label, OEM, and ODM clients across all major fragrance families — from Arabic and oud compositions to fresh citrus aquatics, from traditional Indian attars to modern gourmand accords.
What Is Custom Fragrance Composition?
Custom fragrance composition is the development of a unique perfume formula tailored to a specific brand, market, or product brief. Unlike selecting a stock fragrance from a library, custom composition results in a formula that is developed, tested, and refined to match the brand's exact creative and commercial requirements.
The process draws on three core disciplines: olfactory creativity, which is the perfumer's ability to envision and construct a balanced accord from raw materials; technical chemistry, requiring a deep understanding of ingredient behaviour, stability, interaction, and shelf life; and IFRA compliance, ensuring every component and its concentration conforms to International Fragrance Association safety standards.
The result is a formula that is original, stable, safe, and commercially repeatable — capable of being reproduced batch after batch with consistency.
Our Development Process
Custom fragrance development at Fragrance & Fashion follows a structured process with clear deliverables at each stage.
1. The Brief
Every composition begins with a brief. This brief can take many forms: it might be a reference fragrance like a competitor product or existing scent that captures the desired direction, a mood board with visual and textual references conveying the intended character, or specific note preferences outlining the top, heart, and base notes the brand wants to feature. It could even be based on a memory or concept, translating an abstract idea, a place, a season, or a feeling into scent.
The brief also includes commercial parameters: target concentration (Extrait, EDP, EDT, Eau Fraîche), target audience, price positioning, and intended market.
Our perfumers work directly with clients — there is no intermediary or agent layer. This direct communication ensures the creative intent is understood accurately from the first conversation.
2. Accord Development
Based on the brief, our perfumers build initial accords, which are trial compositions that explore different interpretations of the brief. This stage involves the careful selection of raw materials from our library of imported and Indian-sourced ingredients. We then focus on balancing the top, heart, and base notes to achieve optimal longevity and projection. Concurrently, we conduct testing for stability and skin performance, alongside rigorous IFRA compliance verification at the ingredient level.
Typically, 2 to 4 initial accords are developed for client evaluation.
3. Sampling and Evaluation
Fragrance samples are prepared and sent to the client for evaluation. Samples are provided on blotter (for initial assessment) and in the intended concentration format (for wear testing).
The client evaluates the samples and provides feedback — more oud, less sweetness, stronger sillage, different dry-down, warmer opening. Our perfumers iterate based on this feedback.
4. Refinement
Based on client feedback, accords are refined through successive rounds. Each round narrows the gap between the initial composition and the brand's vision. Most compositions are finalised within 2 to 4 rounds. Complex briefs or large fragrance families may require additional iterations.
5. Formula Approval and Freeze
Once the client approves the final composition, the formula is frozen — version-controlled, documented, and archived. This frozen formula becomes the master reference for all future production runs, ensuring batch-to-batch consistency.
IFRA conformity documentation is generated at this stage and accompanies the approved formula.

Oriental and Oud
Rich, warm compositions built around oud, amber, saffron, musk, and resinous bases. These are our most requested family for Arabic and oud perfume programmes and GCC-export clients.
Floral
Rose, jasmine, tuberose, iris, and modern floral accords. India's access to natural rose and jasmine absolutes — particularly from Kannauj and the Rajasthan rose harvest — provides a material advantage in this family.
Woody
Sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, patchouli, and agarwood bases. Indian sandalwood (Mysore) and vetiver (Haitian and Indian varieties) are sourced through established supply chains.
Fresh and Citrus
Bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, and aquatic compositions. Ideal for body mists, Eau Fraîche, and summer-oriented lines.
Aromatic
Lavender, thyme, rosemary, and herbal compositions. Often blended with woody or citrus bases for masculine and unisex lines.
Gourmand
Vanilla, tonka bean, caramel, praline, and coffee-inspired accords. Growing demand in D2C and gift-set segments.
Ingredients — Naturals, Synthetics, and Captives
Our fragrance library includes a wide range of raw materials sourced from established international and Indian suppliers:
Natural ingredients — essential oils, absolutes, CO2 extracts, and concrètes. We source from India (rose, jasmine, sandalwood, vetiver, saffron), the Middle East (oud and musk), North Africa (neroli, orange blossom), and Europe (lavender, bergamot).
Synthetic ingredients — aroma chemicals that provide consistency, stability, and cost efficiency. Synthetics are essential in modern perfumery for achieving specific olfactory effects and ensuring batch reproducibility.
Captive ingredients — proprietary aroma chemicals exclusive to specific fragrance houses. Where available, we incorporate captives to create distinctive olfactory signatures that cannot be easily replicated.
The choice between natural, synthetic, and blended compositions depends on the brand's positioning, budget, and target market. We advise on the optimal blend for each application.
IFRA Compliance and Safety Documentation
Every fragrance developed at Fragrance & Fashion complies with IFRA (International Fragrance Association) standards — the global benchmark for fragrance ingredient safety.
IFRA compliance involves several critical steps. It begins with ingredient-level screening, where each raw material is checked against IFRA's restricted and prohibited lists. We then ensure that concentration limits are respected, as certain ingredients have maximum concentration thresholds depending on the product category, such as fine fragrance, body lotion, or candles. Allergen declaration is also a key part of the process, ensuring EU and UK regulations for allergen labelling above specific thresholds are met. Additionally, we handle the generation of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for each finished composition. Finally, stability testing is conducted to verify that the fragrance remains stable in its intended vehicle—whether alcohol, oil, or wax—over its expected shelf life.
This documentation is essential for any brand selling into regulated markets — particularly the EU, UK, and US — and is provided as standard with every approved formula.

From Composition to Production
Custom fragrance composition is the starting point of a larger production journey. Once the formula is approved, it feeds directly into our private label manufacturing pipeline:
- Formula freeze → approved composition archived
